According to the Center for Disease Control, except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. It is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women and is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women – which is why actress Uma Thurman jumped at the chance to be the 2010 ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue 2010 Key To The Cure campaign.
“Everyone I know has been affected by breast cancer one way or the other,” says Thurman.
Saks has teamed up with the Henry Ford Health System for the 2010 Key To The Cure event, a charity shopping weekend taking place in October. Proceeds from the shopping weekend will benefit local charities the Josephine Ford Cancer Center and the Francee & Benson Ford Jr. Breast Care & Wellness Center.
Celebrated designer Donna Karan created this year’s T-shirt to benefit Key To The Cure because it’s an issue that’s close to her heart. “For me, it’s not just about dressing women; it’s about addressing the issues that are so important to all of us,” says Karan. “I lost my mentor, Anne Klein, and my best friend, Lynn Kohlman, to breast cancer. We’ve made great strides, but we still don’t have a cure.”
The exclusive, limited-edition T-shirt created by Karan will sell for $35 at Saks Fifth Avenue stores, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores, and on saks.com. The T-shirt debuts at Saks on October 1, and 100 percent of the proceeds from each shirt sold will be donated to local charities.
“It is vital that we work toward a cure, as well as develop more accurate and advance testing,” says Thurman. “I am proud to be a part of Key To The Cure and look forward to the day we can say breast cancer is no longer a life-threat to women.”
Karan, for one, thinks Saks couldn’t have picked a better ambassador this year.
“Who better than Uma Thurman to represent this campaign?” States Karan. “She’s a mother and an artist and is passionate about making a difference.”
Saks charity shopping weekend will take place October 21 to 24 at all Saks stores nationwide, including a kick off party at the Somerset Collection in Troy on Thursday, October 21, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 and $55 and include a $50 Saks Fifth Avenue gift card, call 313.874.6734 or visit henryford.com/key.
“Our clients, vendor partners, and associates join together each year to make Key To The Cure one of Saks Fifth Avenue’s most successful charitable initiatives, which everyone in our organization is extremely proud of,” says Stephen Sadove, chairman and CEO, Saks Fifth Avenue.
“I am so pleased to add Donna Karan and Uma Thurman to the incredible list of designer and celebrity partners who have generously donated their talent and time to ensure that this program continues to make a difference in the communities we serve.” – Rebecca Wall
